Of course the martial art made its way to Japan eventually and a more concrete system was formed. All of the smaller styles were brought together under one roof which was known as the Shotokan style and was created by Gichin Funakoshi. Of course he is also the teacher who made this art very popular and he was also the one to create a system for the art.
Eventually a system was made for this martial art and a ranking system was actually formed. Now each martial artist had to start with a white belt and had to go through a series of colored belts in order to reach the highest belt which is black belt. The belt of a student is based on his experience.
Now during the 1950s, a new style which was a hybrid of Shotokan and other styles emerged. This style took the name of Kyokushin and is the style that is being taught in majority of schools today. This style heavily emphasizes full contact fighting and puts heavy emphasis on being very tough because the belief of this art is that in order to beat an opponent down, one has to be plain strong.
